The Role of Fasteners in HVAC Duct Systems
A well-designed HVAC duct system is only as reliable as its support and fastening system. Duct sections must be securely suspended from ceilings, mounted on walls, or supported from structural elements — all while maintaining proper alignment, elevation, and vibration isolation. The fasteners and hangers used in duct installation are critical for safety, structural integrity, and long-term performance.
This guide covers the essential fasteners that every HVAC contractor needs for professional duct installation.
Threaded Rods
Threaded rods are the backbone of most duct hanger systems. They are used to suspend duct sections from concrete ceilings and structural beams at specified intervals.
Common sizes for HVAC:
- M8 (5/16") — Light residential ducts
- M10 (3/8") — Standard commercial ducts up to 1200 mm wide
- M12 (1/2") — Large commercial and industrial ducts
Materials available:
- Galvanized Iron (GI) — Best for most HVAC applications due to corrosion resistance
- Mild Steel (MS) — Suitable for indoor, dry environments
- Stainless Steel — Required in corrosive environments, clean rooms, and food processing facilities
Threaded rods are typically available in 1-meter and 3-meter lengths. They are cut to the required length on site using a hacksaw, grinder, or bolt cutter.
Drop-in Anchors
Drop-in anchors are the most commonly used fastener for attaching threaded rods to concrete ceilings. A hole is drilled into the concrete, the anchor is inserted and expanded using a setting tool, and the threaded rod is then screwed into the anchor.
Key considerations:
- Anchor size must match the threaded rod diameter
- Minimum concrete thickness requirements must be followed
- Drill hole diameter and depth must be precise per manufacturer specifications
- Always use a setting tool for proper anchor expansion
Load ratings: A properly installed M10 drop-in anchor in quality concrete can support 200-400 kg in tension, well above the weight of most duct sections.
Beam Clamps
When ducts are installed below structural steel beams, beam clamps provide a secure attachment point without drilling or welding. The clamp grips the beam flange, and a threaded rod hangs from the clamp.
Types:
- C-Clamps — Simple clamp for light to medium loads
- Flange Clamps — Heavy-duty clamps that grip both sides of the beam flange
- Purlin Clips — Spring clips for attachment to C-purlin roofing structures
Beam clamps are rated for specific load capacities and beam flange thickness ranges. Always verify compatibility with your structural steel.
U-Bolts
U-bolts are used to secure round ducts and pipes to support channels, trapeze frames, and structural members. The U-shaped bolt wraps around the duct or pipe, and nuts on both threaded ends clamp it in place.
Sizes: Available for pipe/duct diameters from 15 mm to 300 mm.
Materials: GI, MS, and SS, with rubber-lined versions available to prevent vibration and galvanic corrosion.
Self-Tapping Screws
Self-tapping screws (also called TEK screws) are used to join sheet metal duct sections together. They drill their own pilot hole and tap threads into the sheet metal, creating a fast and secure connection.
Common types for duct work:
- #8 × 1/2" hex head — Most common for rectangular duct corner joints
- #10 × 3/4" hex head — For heavier gauge duct material
- Pan head and CSK head — For flush-mount applications
Self-tapping screws are also used to attach flexible duct collars, register boots, and access doors to rectangular duct sections.
Spring Channel Nuts
Spring channel nuts (also called strut nuts or spring nuts) are used with strut channel (Unistrut-type) support systems. They slide into the channel and grip when a bolt is tightened, providing a versatile and adjustable mounting point.
Applications:
- Cable tray mounting
- Pipe and duct support frameworks
- Equipment mounting on strut channel frames
